we reflect (we*re) is the most personal thing i've made. building a brand has been a long-held dream, and life arranged it so the brand i got to build was a brand about connection.
the seed came from aleena (partner). she brought me an idea, a conversation card, like uno, but pulling people inward instead of through a game. i was sceptical. we let the idea sit for a year. we travelled, met people. when we came back to it, it had grown into something we were ready to build.
the name surfaced before the brand did. we reflect, and shortened, we*re. we are. a name that's already a sentence about being together. the asterisk became the small point where two people meet. reflection became the motto. the brand grew out of it, not the other way around.
the approach
manifesto first, mark second. before any logo work, aleena and i wrote a manifesto: reflection, honesty, slowness, connection over performance. once the words held, the visual identity became a question of how to draw the manifesto, not how to make a logo.
one day to design the mark, a lifetime to know what to build on. the wordmark itself came together quickly. we reflect shortened to we*re, the asterisk reading as the small point where two people meet. the work that took time was earning the right to draw it.
a brand we use ourselves. aleena and i are avid users of conscious cards. the brand wasn't built to be sold first and lived later. it's the other way around. every design decision had to survive our own use of it.
outcome
we reflect launched at wereflect.life with conscious cards as its first product: 96 emotion-based questions, designed to deepen conversation between people who already know each other (or want to). the brand system carries into packaging, posters, the website, and a growing language for further products and rituals.
what surprised us: the brand keeps writing itself. once the manifesto held, every new artefact (a tote, a poster, a card face) felt like it was already there, waiting to be drawn.
